Grotto Classes are only ever taught by a published writer in that specific genre.

Only published novelists teach our novel-writing classes. Only published memoirists teach our memoir classes. And only working journalists teach our non-fiction classes.

That’s why San Francisco Magazine voted Grotto Classes Best of the Bay Area.

The students in all of our classes get the opportunity to read their writing at our 3-Minute Reading Series at Book Passage at the SF Ferry Building. More than 100 people attend this event. Check the upcoming classes page for the most current dates and times.

Registration for our Spring Session is now open!

Nicolas Soto – Our Grotto Classes Scholar

Grotto Classes is proud to announce our partnership with Dave Eggers’ Scholar Match, an organization which uses crowd-funding to help send underprivileged students – often the first in their family – to college.

We have chosen Nicolas Soto, a senior at Leadership High in the Excelsior to be our Grotto Scholar. Nicolas has a 3.45 GPA, tutors in an after school program, and aspires to be an English teacher. In his essay for Scholar Match, Nicolas wrote, “Writing is everything to me.”

Grotto Classes is asking every student who registers for a class to donate at least $10 to Nicolas’ college fund. To  donate, click here and answer the question ‘I would like my tax-deductible donation to support:’ by choosing Student Scholarship. Then type ‘Grotto Scholar‘ in the box that asks you to provide guidelines about the type of student you’d like to support.

You’ll even get credit for your donation. Within a day or so of donating, your name will appear on the Grotto Sponsor Page of the Scholar Match website. This is a cumulative page, so as you donate over the course of 2013, you will move up through the sponsorship levels.

Of course, you can donate anytime. Only 1 in 10 first-generation students finishes college. Knowing that a group of strangers – especially fellow aspiring writers – has come to together to help them pay for their tuition can be incredibly motivating!
