Dates: November 8 – December 13

Description: You’ve got a great story, or pieces of a story, for a book. This class will help you shape your personal writing into a book, or polish up the book you’re already working on. This class is for students who have taken a beginning memoir class (at the Grotto or elsewhere) or are well along the way with a memoir; please email a sample chapter to Laura to apply. In a safe, intimate, and challenging class, we will workshop pieces of the memoir, and discuss narrative structure, voice, style, and thorny questions about when personal is too personal. We’ll take a look at various examples of great memoirs for inspiration. While the class will focus on the writing, we will also talk about how to get a memoir published.

Instructor Bio: Laura Fraser is the author of the memoirs An Italian Affair and All Over the Map. She has published thousands of articles in such publications as the New York Times, O the Oprah Magazine, Gourmet, Vogue, Wired, Afar, and many others. Laura has taught magazine writing at the University of California at Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism and at many other venues.
