Rooted & Written
Rooted & Written is a free program designed to help emerging writers of color refine their craft under the mentorship of established writers of color, as well as build relationships in the publishing industry. Published and unpublished writers of color are encouraged to apply. We welcome poetry, fiction, nonfiction, screenplay — whatever your craft, we want to see it!
Our first series of classes took place at the Writers Grotto in San Francisco in September 2019. At the end of the program, select participants read their work at the Rooted & Written closeout party.
First-year faculty included Vanessa Hua (bestselling author, A River of Stars), Shanthi Sekaran (author, Lucky Boy, a Library Journal and NPR best book of the year), Faith Adiele (PEN Open Book Award winner), Xandra Castleton (Emmy Award-winning screenwriter and film producer) and Irving Ruan (frequent contributor to The New Yorker), among others.
If you’d like a taste of the September 2019 session, the Writers Grotto’s in-house podcast, The GrottoPod, produced an episode about Rooted & Written.
